An open apology to my grandson

 Dear Jesse:

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry that you probably won't have the same quality of life that I enjoyed for most of my first 60+ years of my life.

I'm sorry you won't be able to enjoy most of the outdoor spaces and activities that I just took for granted.

I'm sorry that the asthma you will most likely endure will inhibit your ability to enjoy every day things.

And I'm sorry that, in all likelihood, your lifespan won't be as long as mine could be.

I'm sorry because my generation and the one that preceded me, as well as the ones that trailed me all failed by allowing a pigheaded, narrow-minded little man take over first, our country, then our way of life and finally the future you and your generations were owed.

Please know that I tried. It's just unfortunate that those that KNEW better didn't DO better. They tell me that actions have consequences - I guess you are living the consequences many of us knew would happen.

I'm sorry.

- Grandpa
